Time Skylon : The French “rocket”

With a new model that its name is inspired by Aeronautics, Time set the standard on road bicycle for 2015.

The super modern factory of Time is located in Vaulx-Milleux, a cozy and quiet neighborhood of 2500 residents, where bicycles are constructed for 28 years now in an family environment.
The French “fabrika” insists on 100% “made in France” construction which aims on the super high quality that handmade in limited production guarantees.
It is true that with Skylon, Time managed to create one of the most beautiful aero frames in market. Even though the frame production would have been delayed and actually it would be available on market by January and after we had the honor to ride it first, few days after Athens Bike Festival.

The Frame
The Skylon is model that was made from scratch with the aim of an aerodynamic attribution which has nothing to do with company’s previous models. In the meanwhile, it is the first “multicoque full carbon” construction with one-piece front Time Triangle. The aerodynamic design is a result of Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD and of the exhausted research at aerodynamic tunnels. It is consisted entirely of carbon which is knitted from the company itself and its construction is based on Resin Transfer Molding RTM technology which Time develops from 1993. The same method also is used by the industry of aircrafts and automobile such as like Airbus, Lamborghini and Ferrari.
With RTM method epoxy resin is soaked under high pressure into the cast that carbon frame is already putted, ensuring this way absolute consistence among carbon stratification, high secure, conformity and hardware endurance.

The bottom bracket which is used for first time is BB386, allowing the increase of cross-section of the tubing and the improvement of stiffness, in which section has increased for 45%. Additionally Time has lowered the height of the head sear for 1.5 inches, increasing the rigidity and creating yet another precisely and more stable direction system. At the same time, a new thinner, lighter with oval aerodynamic design of direct link seat post is added to the model which features a new function to saddle adjustment, much simpler and more manageable from previous frames. The QuickSet technology that is found in Skylon’s headset consists another exclusive Time’s technology, that allows the stand-alone adjustment of headset without moving the stem of bike. Moreover, the headse’s SAFE+ bearings do not need maintenance and give extended lifetime compare to conventional headset bearings.

Peripherals

For the needs of testing, by agreement with the Greek delegation of Time, we decided to place the frame that was given to us the peripherals, from my own bike (Time RXRS Ulteam), the top mechanical series Dura-ace 9000 without the brakes that TRP looked after with the R970 EQ. The transmission was secured with the top and light chain KMC X11 SL DLC, the handlebar was Time’s Ergodrive 42cm (compact and constructed by RTM carbon which consists the Golden pack frame’s condition), as well as the stem Monolink Ulteam 120mm with titanium screws. The saddle was Fizik Antares 00 Breaded, wheels were custom with rims Enve Smart 3.4 and Alchemy center and Sapim CX ray spokes ,tires Continental GP 4000s in 23c and pedals Look Keo Blade Carbon. The bicycle’s total weight, as we weighted it with pedals SRM PC7 and with both superlight Time’s bottle cases (16g each), was 7.060kg. The last week of testing we changed the Dura ACE crankset FC 900(52/36) with the Rotor 3d plus and Q-rings disks, adding few more grams to the bicycle…

The sensation of riding the bike is not easily decribed… For sure, it gives you a quite different feeling from every other road bicycle I have ever tried. In almost a month that I had it in my possession I was describing to friends and fellow cyclists as “magic carpet”, cloud, rocket and while i knew I was not able to fly neither had the performance I would want, this bicycle was giving me the feeling that I was flying while having a constant smile upon my face!
With its exceptional behavior I was in such a mood for riding like I have never been before. The feeling that the bicycle was giving to me was that somehow it was riding itself… You had the sense that there was a secret assistance forced you. Agile, fast, stable absorbing with average hourly speed and escalating pace. The 45+ kilometers were easy to maintain at straight lines and keeping a strong pace was quite effortless at small slopes. Turning was stable like a train while anomalies on pavement were not transferred neither on my back nor on my hands. Without able to jystify it, while it is purebred racing bike it is absolute rigid with low racing geometry alongside is absorbent and comfortable like grand fondo.
As mentioning before, Skylon’s frame geometry has noticeably improved in comparison to previous models RXRS and ZXRS. Whereas I could not ride a Small size Time with stem bigger than 110mm, now I was becoming one piece with the frame and riding easily with the Time stem of 120mm and I did not come against with any problem in that position, even in great distances.
Concerning Skylon’s behavior on mountain, it is quite exemplary. At some ascension timing, the timings were incredible. Even though I had my reservations on “aero” frame behavior on ascensions, most of the time eventually we shared our time with Skylon on mountains in Athens, Trikala, Arkadia and Argolida.
Skylon in descenting is absolutely stunning! I was wishing to never going to end! It gives you the opportunity to lie well on bicycle, while ,in a magic way, it makes you blind trust it entirely…
At the strong sprints at straight lines and pace changing the frame functions exceptional and reacts rapidly to rider’s different desires.
Regarding “aero”, needless to say that Time managed to design an aerodynamic bicycle at the same time without being funky at all, achieving aero-perfomance in a classical line. Especially combined with the specific wheels, the result is actually funny, given that wind is every cyclist worst nightmare it is becoming an inconsiderable factor which is going to trouble you only in extreme conditions. During testing, although I came across with strong winds I never felt strong pull from the wind on the bike as well on side winds the frame was acting excellent.

Conclusion

“Once you ride a Time you’ll never go back”
Time Skylon is one of the best road bikes at this moment! Though it is being commercialized as a straight-line aerodynamic bike for endless sprints, it has wonderful behavior on ascents. Expensive, if we just look the price tag, quite affordable for what is offering, with lifetime warranty in comparison to other companies’ frames on same or higher prices. The finish and the design of frame is excellent just like the quality manufacture. It aims at experienced riders who know what they want, who either want a hi-end frame for racing purposes or for long lasting routes. If you have never owned a Time, think of acquiring one. If you already have in your possession a Time, then you know what you have to do.

Last but not least, I would like to dedicate the testing period of Skylon, as with this article, to the founder of this company Roland Cattin who passed away on 19th of October, during a bicycle ride just outside Paris.
